An abandoned dog is getting ready for a new home after animal rescue groups spent days looking for her after she was discovered wandering Detroit with a plush toy.
“Everybody was posting pictures in Detroit of who they were calling Nicholas, now Nikki because it’s a female, and of course started tagging Heather, South Lyon Murphy – can you help trap this dog?” According to Katrina Weaver, the proprietor of It Is Pawzable Dog Training. “Everybody comes together and works as a team, which is so amazing.”
Nikki’s owner recently died, leaving her to wander the streets with her favorite toy.
After her tale was shared online, volunteers from It Is Pawzable, South Lyon Murphy Lost Animal Recovery, Sugar Mutts Dog Grooming, Almost Home Animal Rescue, and other organizations banded together to find the German shepherd by presenting images of her to neighbors.
One neighbor who had been feeding Nikki while she was homeless is now collaborating with rescue groups to find the dog a new home.
Unfortunately, Nikki is heartworm positive, therefore she will need four months of therapy.
“You can prevent heartworm in your dog by giving him a tablet every month. So now she needs to get injections, which are similar to pesticides in that they kill the worms, and the dog has to be extremely calm and can only go for leash walks for a while, which is uncomfortable,” Weaver explained.
While Nikki is being cared for, the animal professionals ensure that she is ready to go to her foster home.
“I’ve previously worked for South Lyon Murphy. Kristina Thompson, proprietor of Sugar Mutts Grooming, stated, “I groomed their dog Murphy, who had been on the streets for months.” “We’re just delighted to help. I saw the narrative, and she and her stuffy were simply going around. It was very terrible, and I quickly contacted Heather and said we’d love to help and be a part of her joyful home.”
Almost Home is collecting donations to assist pay for Niki’s treatment and care.
